Choosing the Most Effective Colours for Your Business Signage

Because business signage is the first visible advertisement for any company's services or products, corporations spend huge amounts of money researching the most appealing choice of colours for their specific needs.

One of the first considerations in choosing the right colour combination is the level of visibility that will be created. By contrasting a light colour font or graphic on a dark background or a dark font or graphic on a light background, viewers will be more drawn to your signage. Fonts should be legible and uncomplicated. The background or graphic should never overpower or distract from the actual message of the sign.

Since people react psychologically to various colours, you should choose the shades that most closely identify with your business or company theme. Warm colours tend to encourage people to feel comfortable enough to relax and linger. If you want customers or clients spending extra time in your store or restaurant, you'll want to pick from a pallet of colours that have comforting layers of reds, oranges and yellows in them. If you want your signage to be a real attention getter, yellow is a universal favourite. You can pick a signature colour such as hot pink or electric green. Strong reds and blues are always popular choices.

CHOOSING THE MOST EFFECTIVE COLOURS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Tips for choosing the best colours for your signage

  1. Does your business already have an established brand colour? You'll want to work with that unless you are ready to completely overhaul your advertising format.

  2. Orange, yellow and red are generally considered high arousal colours; and blues, greens and violet tend to be lower in arousal response. However, within these families, entirely different reactions can be created by intensifying or lessening the shades.

  3. Never let an intense background colour or graphic overpower the most important message on your signage.

  4. Work with contrasting complementary pairs for powerful impact.

  5. A black-white combination is clearly legible and less expensive.

Feature Wall

What is a feature wall?
A feature wall is one wall in a room that you've decided to highlight in a bold colour or with wallpaper or other materials, to show off its features and add interest, style and energy to your room. Feature walls can be digitally printed to a wallpaper like material with endless options provided the files to be digitally printed are high resolution to reduce pixilation. Typically greater then100dpi at size.

Should I have one?
If you're a colour commitment phobe or worried that wallpapering an entire room is too over the top, then a feature wall is what you need. Think of it as the speed-dating of decorating: it's a simple way to inject personality and interest into a space without having to commit to bright colour in the whole room. And when you get tired of the design, it's quick and easy to redecorate too.

Which wall is best?
As a basic rule, choose a wall that's as plain as possible, without doors or windows. Interior designer Joanna Wood says it's important you don't just think of walls, either. "A chimney breast or alcove both make great features," she says.

And, says Joanna, as you're going to be drawing attention to your chosen wall, think hard about whether it's worth showing off. "Does it have beautiful architectural elements or will you be highlighting a piece of furniture that you really love," she says.

Placing your bed against a feature wall makes for an unusual and striking bed head, for example. Paint the wall in a bold colour (strong and sexy shades such as plum and sapphire can work well) or for a more sophisticated and glam touch, cover your wall in a material like velvet or silk

How do I choose the right colour?
For a subtle effect, choose a complementary shade to that of the rest of the room; a darker or lighter intensity of the same colour as the other three walls can really work well. If you're into a bit more drama then pick contrasting colours - those that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel (a warm brown with duck egg blue for example).

Our work:

Recently we have completed a feature wall in a house and it looks really great. It is for a kid's room.
