Message from the General Manager

This year has flown by once again and we have just completed our 300 jobs in a 100 days campaign - I am pleased to announce that we placed 383 people into work in 100 days - that is an amazing achievement.

The staff and employers across our region were fabulous in this campaign and helping people get into employment is always the focus of what we do and why we continue to do what we do.

We would like to continue to encourage employers to contact our offices and speak to our friendly staff so we can help you to continue to fill your vacancies - our free call number is 1800354414

As we head into our busy Harvest Labour Season on the Tablelands we hope that employers remember to call our QITE staff to help with their crops. Our Mareeba office is only closed for public holidays and staff are very happy to take your calls.

We have also achieved many great results throughout 2018 which includes starting our New Disability Employment Services Contract which commenced in July, continuing to operate our childcare centre in Mareeba and opening 6 community pantries across the region.

I would like to thank the Board, Managers and Staff for all of their support and hard work over this last year and as we head into the Christmas season I wish each and every one of you a safe, happy and healthy Christmas and New Year spent with loved ones.

QITE look forward to working with you all in 2019.

The Mareeba Jobs Fair

On 26 October 18 QITE staff attended the Mareeba jobs fair with our keen clients. We had a great turn out with QITE jobseekers coming from Innisfail, Cairns, Atherton and Mareeba to apply for the available positions. Our clients had a great day and really enjoyed the opportunity.

QT's Early Learning Childcare Centre

The staff at QT's Early learning Centre in Mareeba were saying goodbye recently to the kindy kids of 2018.The four and five year olds were given a send off on Wednesday 5th December, with a kindy ‘graduation' ceremony to mark the end of their time at the centre. A certificate, a graduation photo and a book of memories were handed over while the kids showed off their performing skills to eager parents. The annual Christmas party followed the ceremony with kids of all ages lining up for the chance to sit on Santa's knee and get a gift. The children will now be preparing for Prep in 2019 with the majority enrolling at both St Thomas of Villanova and Mareeba State School. Centre Director Siale Jenkins said it was emotional to wave them off. “So many of them have been here for years and we get so close to them," she said, “It's hard to say goodbye, but we know they are so excited for school."

AccessAbility Day

During the week of 26 - 30 November 2018, Q,I.T.E. was very proud to have took part in AccessAbility Day - a new Australian Government initiative developed to connect jobseekers with disability and employers.

There are 2.2 million Australians living with disability who are of working age, but Australians with disability are under-represented in the workforce. In fact, the employment rate for people with disability is almost half compared to those without disability.

AccessAbility Day provides a great opportunity for employers and people with disability to connect for a day and experience what each has to offer.

Employers will see the potential people with disability can bring to the workplace and learn about available business support.

People with disability will experience different workplaces and roles that align with their career interests.

Ready - Set - Connect

Q.I.T.E. also attended and hosted a table at Ready-Set- Connect in Cairns in Oct, what a fanatic event we were fortunate to be part of.

Cairns Professional Disability Networking Event brought together Service Providers and Organisations within the health and disability sector looking to promote their business and products to Disability Employment Service staff, Support Coordinators, Community Engagement Specialists and LACS in a fun and interactive speed dating format.

Taking part in this event gave Q.I.T.E. a fantastic opportunity to build networks with other service providers, promote the services of Q.I.T.E. as a whole and promote our new DES ESS Program. DES staff gained invaluable knowledge of services and activities available in the community, both funded and mainstream.

Keeping You Informed

Mareeba has been named the largest urban centre in Far North Queensland outside Cairns. According to an Economic Snapshot provided by the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce in 2018, the strong growth of Mareeba Shire over the last decade has seen the town emerge as the largest urban centre in Far North Queensland outside of Cairns.

The latest Census data for population by usual place of residence in urban centres (as defined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics) recorded:

Part of the reason for Mareeba Shire and Mareeba's urban growth has been the very strong growth in agriculture that has occurred in recent years.

The data also indicates that this resulted in a rise in employment in agriculture by 31%. The emergence of Mareeba as the second largest urban centre signals the growing importance of the region's extensive “wet/dry" topics in the region's economic progress.

The Employment Services Expert Advisory Panel's report I Want to Work: Employment Services 2020 is now available.

The panel's report highlighted the success of the current employment services, jobactive, in providing 1.2 million job placements since its launch in July 2015. Stakeholders suggested, in moving forward, there were numerous opportunities to enhance employment service delivery by simplification, harnessing the use of digital technology and cutting red tape.
